Hi! Remember me?

I'm not one for regularly sitting at a computer any more. I'm not studying anymore, or have lots of free time from a part time job.
I've grown up. Got a real job. And unfortunately has a list of priorities that blogging is not so high up on.
But technology has come to my rescue. Phones with Internet access and the blogger app. Now I have no excuse. Now I will always have access to my blog.

just a quicky....

I know, I suck at this regular update thing, that's why no one reads my blog huh?

Well tassie was awesome. Have also been to Victoria. started a garden and helped to start a bike shop. That's why I haven't been online. I have been SO busy.

Garden is good. An idea to stop spending so much on grocceries and grow them myself. So far I have carrots, beans, broccoli and raspberries. I'll also plant some garlic and onions and hopefully some potatos.

And them some others when the weather get's warmer.

Then I have to organise NASC, as part of the AAA... busy busy. I'll have to fill you in later. I'm off to dinner tonight.

Oh, and happy anniversary blog. B-day minus 3 days!

To oblivion and beyond.

Getting there. Slowly. I have been accepted for centrelink, which is great because now I can actually pay my phone bill, Internet bill, and buy food. Always a bonus.

If I Play my hand right I might even be able to save some money too! But that is a bit of a way off. What else I new, Not a lot. I went to the beach the other day with a friend, which was nice, and we had icey poles (it was 35 odd degrees!). Other than that I've note been doing much as I have not had the money to do anything.

Chicken and chips at a mates place which was good. It got me out of the house. And I've started a game of Elder scrolls IV: Oblivion... bad idea. It's so addictive. Almost as bad as fable, but it frustrating as the weaponry isn't as trigger sensitive, or move as fast as you want it to. But the graphics aren't bad. And I have to look for the walk through, otherwise I'll never be able to figure the whole game out.

I'm in town right now at an Internet cafe, killing time before I meet my friend for coffee.... mmm. coffee. So I'll have to head off soon. But lets see If I can find the oblivion walk through first...

A while...

It has been, But that's because the Internet at home is playing up, therefore, I am communicationless.

Port Arthur was great... Better than great it was Awesome! I got some great digging experience under my belt now, and some lab work, and more public archaeology to go on the resume.
We worked on three sites, one near a convict kiln that was reused after the penal settlement closed, one which was used by the boys at Point Puer, and the site of the old convict saw pit, that was open in 2005. The saw pit was my favourite. It was the most exciting in it's finds and in it's atmosphere. After the convict site closed, it became the rubbish pit for the town of Canarvon. This made it very artifact rich and we found almost complete bottles, window glass, lamp glass, table crockery and ceramics, fine china, nails, metal fastenings, broken toys, bones and a skull and I even found a broken plate (ie, the false teeth kind). I do love this site, and the place! Working everyday with a fantastic view of the penitentiary.

We also did all the touristy thing, and I went on a tour of the Isle of the Dead, Point Puer, and a ghost tour. Plus raid the gift shop every other day. And the free coffee! My thanks to the Port Arthur Historic Society for that one. It was a godsend every morning.

Communal living was interesting, and I surprised myself with how well I managed to tolerate everyone for. Some were lovely people, and I was sad to leave them as they came from Sydney and Melbourne way. But some... Well. Lets Just say three weeks was around the limit. But the peace of the place and the routine helped to make it work out. And some memories will be dear to me for many years to come.

The only issue I have is with the whole project was the lack of lab work that was done. We tried to get through it all as much as possible for our digs, but those first few days we were sorting the backlog from 2003. That is not right! This brings to light one of the travesties of archaeology and is unfortunately perpetuated bu the plethora of archaeology programs.
The exciting bit is the excavation. The dirt, the tools, the exciting finds, the big rectangular hole in the ground. And that's it the exciting bit. it's the bit that draws the crowds... But archaeology doesn't stop there, although that's as far as most people think to. The artifacts found have to be cleaned. Sorted. Labled. Measured. Catalogued. This is a long process and can take three times as long as the actual dig did. and while it's not that exciting to the public, it is actually the most important parts of an archaeological excavation. This is where the information comes from! How can we know that meat was scarce? By the lack of bones found once the excavation is finished! the families were well off. how do we know? Because of the analysis of ceramic fragments have shown that high end table wares were readily discarded when broken, not repaired, because the large number of pieces show no signs of repair.
This is where the stories are told and it was absolutely heartbreaking to leave behind the cleaning sorting and cataloguing of our finds. They wouldn't be done while we were gone. They don't have the budget for that. Instead they'll sit on the shelves, waiting for next years group of volunteers to come in and pick up where we left off... A back log of 5 years! this is just not good enough. And the problem is that excavation brings the public. That brings the money. Then they have to spend it on sorting, preserving and analysis? Why should they. It's a common attitude amongst places like that and the general public and it needs to be changed! people need to be exposed to the rest of archaeology. They need to understand that the sorting cleaning and analysis is WHY we do archaeology. Time team can show all the fancy digging and washing, but until they and similar shows show the rest of the work 'behind the scenes' as it were, we will not change this attitude and years of work will go to waste.

It's an issue that needs addressing, and hopefully by ranting it here, someone will read it and think a bit more about archaeology and the step after the 'cool' bit.

There's more to talk about, but i feel a bit drained right now.

Another year over, a new one just begun...

OK, Christmas is over. Thank whatever deity you believe in.

It's not that i don't like Christmas, I just have had many years of bad Christmas experiences and so as a reaction I try to ignore the hype and if it wasn't for everyone else around me, I'd treat it if it where just another normal day.

I spent Christmas in broken hill again... See above.

Every year I tell myself I won't, but I haven't spent Christmas there for three years, so i figure i should. Now I really remember why i don't want to spend Christmas there. Or really any time there... It's hard to give advise to those you care about and see it ignored time after time after time.

Anyway. new years was quiet too, only because I forgot about the party I was invited to. Oh well. I had fun anyway. We stayed up watching movies (Die hard, Mongol and clone wars) and listened to the fireworks at semaphore (we couldn't actually see them).

Now, I'm trying to do all the last minute stuff before I head off to Tassie tomorrow for the dig at port Arthur. Washing jumpers (because mid summer and it snows there!) and patching my jeans, and rushing around because the assignments I handed in a month ago didn't get to the lecturer and so I have to send copies to him. AH! Any way I also have one other paper due which I am having a heap of trouble with. But that's my own issue. i just can't absorb the topic material.

Anyway, I have to eat breakfast yet, and finish organising my bags and various kits (dig, first aid etc). Then here's my shedual:

2nd: Organise, start to pack

3rd: Morning - Finish packing
Lunch - Beach?
Afternoon - Catch 2:45 flight to Melbourne, then wait for connecting flight to Hobart leaving at 8:30pm.
Night - Arrive Hobart 10:45 pm.

4th : Supply shop. Staying in backpaker accommodation so need basics (noodles bread etc)

5th: Bus to port Arthur leaving at 4pm.

6th... start digging? After here I'm not sure of the exact itinerary. I'll get it, and If I get a chance while I'm there, I'll update.

We'll see. Anyway. Back to it.

Reprieve and christmas.

A reprieve has occurred. I have an extension on the osteology which is good. Means I can breath a little before I get it done.

I still have to get it done soon though, on top of Christmas, enrolling, writing and submitting my thesis proposal and heading off to Tassie. I won't have time until February. Way after it's actually due. So yeah.

Just online checking financials and emails before going off to Marion for final Tassie and Christmas shopping. I need some slouch around jumpers so I'll not freeze in Pt Arthur in the evenings, and nothing so fancy because they'll get dirty on field.

Nearly have my kit organised. Just a few more things to place in the personal first aide kit, neurphen, herron, betadine and non-elastaplast band-aides that the kit came with (I'm allergic to the adhesive). And I'll have to get Aaron to find my mirofibre towel, which is probably put away from the last time we went camping...

I don't know whether I'll be able to keep the blog up to date in tassie, didn't ask if there was a net cafe nearby. We'll see i guess. Anyway. Off now for shopping madness in the Christmas frenzied shopping centre at Marion.... God speed child!

It's called the silly season for a reason.... you go nuts!

I know, I'm hopeless at keeping up a blog.

For my defense though, I have been busy. i had two intensive uni courses in a row, then three assignments due for them. In the mean time I have to organise all of my chrismass things as I'm flying to Broken Hill on the 19th to spend it with my olds, and straight after that I'm off to port Aruthur for the three week dig, so I have to be organised for that as well as I won't have any time to get the things I may need in the three days over new years.

Today I'm having a break day then I'm off tomorrow to last minute catch ups, shopping, toilteries for both trips etc, then tea at mum in laws. Thursday I'm at marion all day getting the clothes I'll need in tassies brisk summer weather as well as payamas as I have none and will be sleeping in a dorm environment. Then at the Grandparennts in law that night for chrissmas things. Finally friday pack, double check then fly out.

The main issue is that there is nothing really in Broken Hill to get all this stuff, and so I won't. Well, can't. And now I'm trying to figure out how and if i'm going to be able to get my masters proposal done in Broken Hill so I don't have to do it while I'm on a dig.

Sigh! I'll try and let you knwo how I go in a timley manner =)
